Natural notes anchor the chromatic grid

Each fret raises pitch by one semitone. Natural notes on a string follow the alphabet, with adjacent-fret pairs B-C and E-F. Fret 12 repeats the open-string pitch class one octave higher.

Unison means the same pitch; octave equivalence means the same pitch class at a higher or lower register. Two locations can share a note name while producing different registers and timbres.
