A part earns its place by doing a job

Useful guitar layers usually separate register, rhythm, articulation, and density. If two parts share the same range and strum pattern, one may need to simplify, move, answer, or rest.

Capo, triads, partial chords, muted rhythm, pedal tones, ostinatos, and counterlines are arrangement tools. Silence is also a tool: it creates contrast and keeps important events audible.
